Who Died? The Walking Dead Season 7 Premiere Review

We're Just Getting Started

Warning: SPOILERS are going to be involved in this post. You have been warned.

Well that just happened…If you’re reading this then you’re one of the many who saw the much anticipated premiere of AMC’s The Walking Dead. For months fans of this series have been on their edge of their seats asking only one question. WHO DIED?

Now by some miracle you have no idea what I’m talking about then you may need to buy yourself season 1-6 and catchup. I’ll even help you out with a link here. Season’s 1-6 are on available on Amazon and Netflix for previewing.

The Evolution of Glenn

One of the greatest pleasures of The Walking Dead are the characters. Since its first season back in 2010 the show has established a great collection of characters throughout its run. The comic books and TV series both share this character centric story where people must come together in order to survive. The audience easily get drawn into the lives of these people during a horrifying zombie apocalypse.

When the series started it just average people learning about the new world created. A new world covered with the dead (Walkers) looking to consume any living thing they can find. It would be easy to just focus on just the monsters like other media in this genre. What makes The Walking Dead different is that they tried to avoid this. The greatest monsters the survivors face are not just the dead but the living.

In previous seasons the characters have comes and gone. In fact a few seem to always go when new ones arrive in the group. Last night’s death maybe have been the hardest on long time fans. Here was the set up; In the season 6 finale our survivors were rushing to get Maggie medical attention from the doctor at the Hilltop community. In their attempts to reach the community the survivors ran into The Saviors.

If you’re a fan of the comic then you know a bit about these guys.  Based on the comic, The Saviors are group of survivors following the leadership of a man named Negan. Negan has a strict system to his organization believing his people will save humanity regardless of who gets in their way.

The survivors of the series before this point have always been the ones on top. With the leadership of Rick Grimes they have been able to overcome on adversary after another. In the finale this all changed for the characters. It was the first time Rick and his friends were at the mercy of another group. Negan’s Saviors didn’t just have numbers but they also had the strategy to overcome our protagonist. After a climatic cliffhanger of Rick’s group at the mercy of Negan a choice had to be made. For months people have had analyzed videos to determine who had to die but one the production had the final answer. On October 23rd they decided to share that answer with the rest of the world.

Batter Up!

Now when it came to episode I was glad they didn’t just tell us who. The episode become more about superiority between Rick and Negan. In the past Rick was always the one who knew he was going to do what it took to keep his people safe. Negan on the other hand knew he had to be the one to steal that way. This was a pure example of two alpha males having a go at each other to see who will be in charge.

Saving the deaths to show more of Negan’s personality was far more fulfilling to me. While Rick recalls the evens we finally know that Abraham was the one chosen by Negan to die. To me this was an expected choice by this recent positive mindset in season 6. Also having a strong man with defiant eyes around is something Negan appears to have problems with.

The real shocker had to be what happens next. Daryl’s outburst to punch Negan forces his had into action. As a man of his word he chose to show the group the consequences of defiance. In clever camera framing we see Negan position himself next to another victim. In a hard massive swing of his bat Lucille he strikes Glenn in the head. The best part to me is the commitment to the source material as a surprise act. Just like the panels of the comic we see Glenn’s head crushed and eye popping out calling out to Maggie. The group continues to watch as Negan bashes more on Glenn with his bat. All that is left his a headless corpse twitching in a pool of blood.

In the aftermath Rick is forced to submit to Negan’s authority. This is the first time that we have seen our protagonist of the series helpless, hurt and mental broken but a superior enemy. This season appears to be “coming out swinging” with an amazing performance by JD Morgan as Negan. The graphic visuals aren’t for the weak stomachs but any real fan would know that this is The Walking Dead.

Fight the dead. Fear the living.
