Now when it came to episode I was glad they didn’t just tell us who. The episode become more about superiority between Rick and Negan. In the past Rick was always the one who knew he was going to do what it took to keep his people safe. Negan on the other hand knew he had to be the one to steal that way. This was a pure example of two alpha males having a go at each other to see who will be in charge.
Saving the deaths to show more of Negan’s personality was far more fulfilling to me. While Rick recalls the evens we finally know that Abraham was the one chosen by Negan to die. To me this was an expected choice by this recent positive mindset in season 6. Also having a strong man with defiant eyes around is something Negan appears to have problems with.
The real shocker had to be what happens next. Daryl’s outburst to punch Negan forces his had into action. As a man of his word he chose to show the group the consequences of defiance. In clever camera framing we see Negan position himself next to another victim. In a hard massive swing of his bat Lucille he strikes Glenn in the head. The best part to me is the commitment to the source material as a surprise act. Just like the panels of the comic we see Glenn’s head crushed and eye popping out calling out to Maggie. The group continues to watch as Negan bashes more on Glenn with his bat. All that is left his a headless corpse twitching in a pool of blood.
In the aftermath Rick is forced to submit to Negan’s authority. This is the first time that we have seen our protagonist of the series helpless, hurt and mental broken but a superior enemy. This season appears to be “coming out swinging” with an amazing performance by JD Morgan as Negan. The graphic visuals aren’t for the weak stomachs but any real fan would know that this is The Walking Dead.
